How to select the right thickness of cold room panels?

Cold rooms have high energy consumption, so selecting the right thickness of cold room panels is key to maintaining the required temperature and optimal energy use.

The most commonly used system for building cold rooms is prefabricated cold room panels. Compared to traditional insulation, it offers a series of advantages such as quick assembly, easy maintenance, and reduced installation costs. This system consists of two steel sheets injected with polyurethane foam, resulting in a homogeneous, lightweight, and highly versatile final product.

When selecting cold room panels for your cold room, it is important to know the thermal insulation and airtightness required to select the most suitable thickness. These can range from 75 mm to 200 mm thick. The chosen thickness will depend on the budget available for the project and the refrigeration requirements.

Types of Cool Room Panels

Here are the most common types used in commercial and industrial settings:

  • Polyurethane (PU) Panels – Known for their superior insulation properties, PU panels provide excellent thermal resistance while being lightweight and durable.
  • Polystyrene (EPS) Panels – A cost-effective option, EPS panels offer decent insulation but may require thicker panels to achieve the same efficiency as PU panels.
  • Polyisocyanurate (PUR/PIR) Panels – Offering enhanced fire resistance alongside great insulation, PIR panels are a go-to choice for facilities with strict safety regulations.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Cold Room Panels

To maximize insulation and energy savings, consider these key factors:

1. Thermal Efficiency

Higher thermal resistance (R-value) means better insulation. PU and PIR panels tend to have the highest R-values, making them ideal for cold storage rooms requiring minimal heat transfer.

2. Panel Thickness

The required thickness depends on your cold room’s temperature needs. A standard guideline:

Cold Rooms for conservation

Chiller rooms (0°C to 5°C)

A thickness of 75-100 mm is recommended for the roof and facade of cold rooms intended for food storage or controlled temperatures that do not require high insulation.

Cold Rooms for freezing

Freezer rooms (-18°C and below)

For installations that require controlled temperatures below -10ºC to -20ºC and high insulation, it is recommended to install a cold room panel with a thickness of 100 mm to 150 mm.

Freezing tunnels (-40 °C)

The ideal thickness for cold storage facilities where temperatures below -20ºC need to be maintained, such as laboratories, meat or fish ultra-freezing, among others, is between 150 mm and 200 mm.

3. Fire Resistance

Some industries require fire-rated panels. If fire safety is a priority, PIR or mineral wool panels are your best options.

4. Energy Efficiency

Well-insulated panels reduce the workload on cooling systems, lowering energy bills. Look for panels with airtight joining systems to prevent thermal leakage.

5. Durability and Maintenance

Cool room panels should be resistant to moisture, bacteria, and impact damage. High-quality finishes, such as food-grade coatings, help maintain hygiene and extend the lifespan of your storage unit.

Summarize

Selecting the right cold room panels isn’t just about insulation—it’s about long-term energy savings, compliance, and operational efficiency. By understanding the materials, thermal properties, and industry requirements, you can build a highly efficient temperature-controlled environment that meets your needs.

How to choose the best floor option for cold storage room?

When considering building a cold storage room, we often ignore the ground insulation of the cold storage room. While walls and ceiling panels, and refrigeration systems often get much of the attention, flooring is just as important for cold storage rooms. Choosing the best flooring for a cold storage room is crucial for maintaining thermal efficiency, hygiene, safety, and durability. The right floor will depend on several factors, including temperature range, usage (foot traffic, forklift movement), hygiene standards, and budget.

Different cold rooms need different floor insulation.

Chiller Room (0°C to 10°C) – Moderate insulation and moisture control.

Freezer Room (-25°C to -15°C) – High insulation, vapor barriers, and frost resistance.

Blast Freezer (-30°C or lower) – Extremely high insulation, anti-slip, durable surface.

The best cold room floor should offer:

Thermal Insulation – To prevent heat transfer and reduce energy loss.

Moisture & Vapor Barrier – Prevents condensation, frost buildup, and mold.

Load-Bearing Strength – Withstands racks, trolleys, or forklifts.

Non-Slip Surface – Essential for worker safety.

Hygienic & Easy to Clean – Especially for food storage.

Durability & Crack Resistance – Especially under freeze/thaw cycles.

5 Main Cold Room Floor Options

1, Insulated Concrete floor with Epoxy Coating

Best For: Heavy-duty industrial cold rooms

Concrete floors reinforced with rigid insulation (like extruded polystyrene) are common in large-scale cold rooms. The insulation layer helps prevent heat loss and frost heave.

Advantages:

Thermal Insulation: Includes a layer of rigid insulation (PU/PIR panels) to reduce heat transfer from the ground. Essential for temperature stability and energy efficiency.

Excellent structural support for heavy loads: Supports heavy loads such as pallet racks, trolleys, and forklifts. Suitable for industrial cold rooms.

Long lifespan with proper sealing

Can be combined with floor heating systems

Disadvantages:

Complex Installation Process: Requires multiple layers (sub-base, vapor barrier, insulation, concrete, coating), precise leveling, and proper curing time. Mistakes during installation can lead to performance issues.

Risk of Frost Heave (in freezers): If the insulation or vapor barrier fails, ground moisture can freeze and expand under the slab, causing cracks or lifting. Requires optional underfloor heating or proper frost protection design.

2, PVC or Vinyl Flooring

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) or Vinyl flooring is a flexible, synthetic floor covering often used in chiller rooms, dry storage areas, and low-traffic cold rooms. It is a cost-effective, easy-to-clean option that provides a smooth, hygienic surface for light-duty cold storage room.

Advantages:

Hygienic & Easy to Clean: Smooth, seamless surface (when sheet vinyl is used) prevents dirt buildup and allows fast sanitization.

Quick & Easy Installation: Fast to install, with minimal downtime;

Disadvantages:

Not Suitable for Freezers rooms: Can crack, shrink, or delaminate at very low temperatures (below -10°C).

Poor Load Resistance: Easily dents or tears under heavy equipment, pallet jacks, or forklifts.

3, Stainless Steel or Aluminium Checkered Plate over Insulation

This flooring system involves placing a checkered (tread) metal plate, typically made of stainless steel or aluminium, on top of insulation panels in a cold room. It’s common in walk-in freezers, fish storage, meat processing, and logistics areas where durability, hygiene, and slip resistance are critical.

Advantages:

Corrosion Resistant: Especially in stainless steel or anodized aluminium; suitable for wet and salty environments like seafood storage.

Quick to Install & Replace: Panels are often modular—easier to install and maintain than poured floors.

Lightweight Option: Aluminium is lighter than concrete or screed, which is useful for modular or mobile cold rooms.

Disadvantages:

Higher Material Cost: Stainless steel is expensive; aluminium is more affordable but less durable.

4, Epoxy Resin Flooring

Epoxy resin flooring is a durable, seamless, and chemical-resistant floor system made by mixing epoxy resin with a hardener, which cures into a hard plastic-like coating. It’s commonly applied over concrete floors to improve performance, appearance, and hygiene—especially in chiller rooms, dry cold rooms, food prep areas, and laboratories.

5, Polyurethane (PU) Screed Flooring

Polyurethane (PU) screed flooring is a heavy-duty, cementitious resin floor system made by combining polyurethane resin with aggregates and additives. It is designed to provide a seamless, highly durable, and chemically resistant surface, ideal for demanding environments such as cold storage rooms, food processing facilities, pharmaceutical areas, and commercial kitchens.

What to consider when installing cold storage room floors?
Beyond selecting the right material, proper installation is necessary to maximize the floor’s performance and longevity. Here’s what to consider:

Substrate preparation: A well-prepared substrate ensures a strong bond between the floor coating and the concrete base. Any moisture, cracks, or uneven surfaces should be addressed before installation.

Insulation and frost protection: Proper insulation prevents frost heave, which can cause the flooring to lift and crack. A vapor barrier may also be necessary to control moisture buildup and frost.

Installation conditions: Temperature and humidity levels impact the curing process of PU concrete flooring and epoxy coatings. Installation should be scheduled during suitable conditions to ensure optimal adhesion and durability.

Maintenance and cleaning requirements: Choosing a flooring solution that aligns with the facility’s cleaning and maintenance protocols helps maintain its integrity and safety.

Do you know the difference between a chiller Room, freezer Room and blast Freezer Room?

There are three common types of cold rooms are chiller room, freezer room, and blast freezer room. Although they serve similar functions – keeping items cold, their temperature ranges, functions, and applications are quite different.

When deciding on a chiller room, freezer room and blast freezer, it’s important to know the options available and how they best service your business. This can greatly impact how you store your products? In fact, when comparing some freezers, they may not be as similar as they first appear. So how do you know what freezer you need and why you need it? Depending on your business, you may require a chiller room, freezer room, a blast freezer, or both.

The Temperature Difference Between a chiller room, freezer Room and a blast Freezer room

1, Chiller room

A chiller room is a temperature-controlled refrigerated storage space designed to keep perishable goods cool—but not frozen. It typically maintains a temperature range of +2°C to +8°C, making it ideal for preserving freshness and slowing down bacterial growth in sensitive products.

Chiller rooms are commonly used to store Fresh meat and seafood, Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt) Fruits and vegetables, Beverages, Pharmaceuticals (vaccines, certain medicines) and Flowers and plants.

Main Features of a Chiller Room

  1. Temperature Range Maintains a stable range between +2°C and +8°C to keep goods fresh
  2. Insulated Panels PU or PIR sandwich panels (usually 75–100 mm thick) for energy efficiency
  3. Refrigeration Unit Includes compressor, condenser, and evaporator to cool the space consistently
  4. Digital Temperature Control Allows precise temperature setting and real-time monitoring

2, Freezer room

Freezer rooms are typically used for storing frozen food products. These rooms operate at temperatures between -15°C to 25°C.

A freezer room is designed to store a range of products and materials at subzero degrees which will prolong the lifespan of food. However, unlike a blast freezer, a freezer room cannot freeze products at a rapid rate.

We can store frozen meat, frozen seafood, frozen chicken and frozen beef etc inside the freezer room.

Main Features of a Freezer Room

  1. Low Temperature Range Maintains consistent freezing temperatures (-15°C to -25°C)
  2. Thick Insulated Panels PU or PIR panels (typically 150mm thick) for excellent thermal sealing
  3. Powerful Refrigeration Unit High-capacity compressor and evaporator designed for sub-zero environments
  4. Digital Temperature Control Accurate thermostat with real-time monitoring and alarms for temperature changes

3, Blast freezer room

A blast freezer cools its contents quickly, rapidly dropping the temperature. Flash freezing in a blast freezer is one of the safest and most effective ways of preventing bacterial growth.

Blast freezers hold temperatures between -30°C to -40°C. As a result, the ice crystals that form in the process are small, causing less damage to the products. This captures the products freshness and nutritional value.

They are commonly used in the frozen food industry for things like meat, beef, chicken, ice cream, pre-prepared meals, and vegetables or fish.

Main Features of a Blast Freezer Room

  1. Ultra-Low Temperature Typically operates between -30°C to -40°C to freeze products rapidly
  2. High-Speed Air Circulation Powerful fans blow cold air at high velocity (up to 12 m/s) for fast cooling
  3. Thick Insulated Panels PU or PIR panels (200 mm) prevent heat gain and improve energy efficiency
  4. Heavy-Duty Refrigeration Unit High-capacity compressor and evaporator designed for fast temperature drop
  5. Digital Control System Precise programming for temperature, time, and product-specific freezing cycles

Key Differences Between a Chiller Room, Freezer Room, and Blast Freezer Room

1. Temperature Range

Chiller Rooms operate at temperatures from +2°C to +8°C , making them ideal for short-term, cool storage. Freezer Rooms operate at temperatures from -25°C to -15°C for long-term freezing, while Blast Freezer Rooms operate at even colder temperatures of -30°C to -40°C to facilitate rapid freezing.

2. Freezing Speed

Chiller Rooms maintain a stable, cool environment, while Freezer Rooms freeze items at a slower pace. Blast Freezer Rooms, on the other hand, are specifically designed for rapid freezing, which helps preserve the quality and texture of perishable goods.

3.Applications

Most food service businesses have both a freezer and chiller room. It all depends on what food you want to store and for how long. Chiller Rooms are typically used for short-time storage of fresh foods, Freezer Rooms are used for long-term storage of frozen goods, and Blast Freezer Rooms are used when rapid freezing is required to preserve the quality of food or other perishable items.
